Instructions for Proper Application of Ostomy Materials

The correct application of ostomy materials is critical for comfort and maintaining healthy skin around the stoma. Follow these steps to ensure safe and effective placement:

1. Cleaning the Skin

• Gently clean the peristomal skin with mild soap free of oily components.
• Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
• Dry the skin and your hands completely, ensuring no oily residues remain.

2. Preparing for Application

• Ensure you have all the necessary materials.
• The materials do not require cutting with scissors to adjust their size.

3. Measuring the Stoma Size

• Use the stoma-measuring guide provided by the manufacturer to determine the size of your stoma.
• If you don’t have the measuring guide, check the packaging for the bases where it might be included.

4. Preparing the Base

• Remove the base from its individual packaging.
• Do not remove the transparent protective cover or adhesive paper strips on the bottom of the base.
• Place your fingers at the center of the base and shape it to match the size and shape of your stoma.

5. Applying the Base

• Remove the transparent protective cover by holding it at the blue point.
• Place the base around the stoma, ensuring it fits securely.
• If there are gaps or folds, apply protective paste as instructed by your healthcare professional.
• Gently press and hold the base in place while counting slowly to 40 for optimal adhesion.

6. Securing the Adhesive Strips

• Remove the adhesive strips one by one and press them onto the base simultaneously.

7. Attaching the Ostomy Bag

• Add a small amount of air to the bag to make it easier to snap into place.
• If necessary, lubricate the connection points between the base and the bag to facilitate attachment.
• Press around the flange of the bag. You will hear a click, confirming that the bag is securely attached.
